How to Deal with Depression: Everything You Need to Know (Major Depressive Disorder)

 WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

The term "depression" refers to a mood disorder. It might be characterised as melancholy, grief, or rage that interferes with daily tasks.

Also, it's very typical. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and PreventionTrusted Source, 18.5% of American adults experienced depressive symptoms at some point during a two-week period in 2019.

Despite the similarities between depression and grief, sadness or grief experienced after a tragic incident or the loss of a loved one are not the same as depression. Grief normally does not involve self-hatred or a loss of self-esteem, although depression frequently does.

Positive feelings and joyful recollections of the deceased frequently go hand in hand with emotional suffering while someone is grieving. Sadness is a persistent feeling in major depressive disorder.

Depression manifests itself differently for each person. Your everyday tasks could be hampered, resulting in lost time and decreased production. Relationships and some chronic medical disorders may also be affected.

Depression can cause certain conditions, such as:

• Asthma

• Arthritis

• Cancer

• Cardiovascular disease's

• Diabetes

• Obesity

It's critical to understand that experiencing sadness occasionally is a natural aspect of life. Everyone experiences sad and disturbing things in life. But if you frequently feel depressed or hopeless, you may be suffering from depression.

SYMPTOMS:

Depression can be more than just a persistently depressed or "blue" feeling.

A major depressive episode can manifest in a number of ways. Some influence your body while others influence your mood. Additionally, symptoms might continue or come and go.

The symptoms of depression vary from person to person. The degree, regularity, and duration of symptoms can all vary.

You may have depression if you have experienced some of the warning signs and symptoms listed below nearly every day for at least two weeks:

• Feeling empty or sad

• Hopeless feeling

• Crying alot

• Feeling angry or annoyed

• Loss of interest

• Decreased energy and muscle fatigue

• Face difficulty in concentrating and making decisions.

• Sleeplessness

• Loss of appetite

• Negative thoughts

TREATMENT:

One type of treatment can be enough to effectively control your symptoms, or you might discover that a mix of treatments is most effective.

Combining medical therapy with lifestyle therapies is frequent and includes the following:

SELECTIVE SEROTONIN RE-UP TAKE INHIBITOR (SSRI)

The most popular antidepressant drugs are SSRIs, which also have a reputation for having few negative effects. By raising the amount of the neurotransmitter serotonin that is available in your brain, they can alleviate depression.

Certain medications, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and occasionally thioridazine or Orap, should not be taken with SSRIs (pimozide).

The dangers of using SSRIs while pregnant should be discussed with healthcare providers by women who are pregnant. If you have narrow-angle glaucoma, you should also exercise caution.

Examples of SSRIs include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil, Paxil XR, Pexeva), and sertraline (Zoloft).

SEROTONIN AND NOR EPINEPHRINE RE-UP TAKE INHIBITOR

By raising the levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine in your brain, SNRIs can alleviate depression.

MAOIs and SNRIs shouldn't be combined. If you suffer from narrow-angle glaucoma, liver, or renal disease, you should proceed with caution.

Desvenlafaxine (Pristiq, Khedezla), duloxetine (Cymbalta, Irenka), milnacipran (Savella), levomilnacipran (Fetzima), and venlafaxine are a few examples of SNRIs (Effexor XR).

TRICYCLIC AND TETRACYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS

The neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine are increased in your brain as a result of taking tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and tetracyclic antidepressants (TECAs), which are used to treat depression.

TCAs are more likely than SSRIs or SNRIs to have adverse effects. TCAs and TECAs should not be taken alongside MAOIs. If you have narrow-angle glaucoma, use with caution.

Amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), trimipramine (Surmontil), desipramine (Norpramin), nortriptyline (Pamelor, Aventyl), and protriptyline are a few examples of tricyclic antidepressants (Vivactil).

There are other medications also for depression which are prescribed by Doctor's.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

You can develop coping mechanisms for unpleasant emotions by speaking with a therapist. Sessions in family or group therapy may also be helpful to you.

When a person meets with a qualified therapist for psychotherapy, commonly referred to as "talk therapy," they discuss the issues that contribute to their mental health condition, such as depression, and learn coping mechanisms.

It has been demonstrated that psychotherapy is a successful treatment for reducing symptoms in patients with depression and other psychiatric diseases.

Drug therapy is frequently used with psychotherapy. Psychotherapy comes in a wide variety of forms, and some people respond better to one form than another.

SUMMARY

Depression may be a short-term problem or a chronic one. Depression doesn't always totally disappear after treatment.

Treatment, however, frequently helps symptoms become more tolerable. Finding the ideal mix of treatments and drugs is essential for managing the symptoms of depression.

Consult your healthcare provider if a treatment doesn't work. They can work with you to develop an alternative treatment plan that might be more effective in assisting you in managing your illness.

Story of 75 years: Pakistan Zindabad 🇵🇰

“The only real prison is fear, and the only real freedom is freedom from fear.”

Azadi has many different meanings in English, including independence, freedom, and liberation. These translations of azadi into English have slightly different meanings. "Condition of a person, nation, country or state in which residents and population, or some component thereof, exercise self-government and typically sovereignty over its territory" is how independence is defined. Being a dependent territory is the antithesis of independence. Although a person is mentioned in this definition of independence, a nation, a state, or a country is normally the subject.

There was a wave of decolonization in the second part of the 20th century. Through specific declarations, such as the 1960 Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, certain colonies were granted the right to independence. It is debatable to what extent all persons are covered by these rights.

On August 14, Pakistanis celebrate their independence with extraordinary fervour, but are they actually independent in the true meaning of the word? Being independent is a blessing since it frees one from external control. It is autonomous. Independent units are not connected to more powerful ones. Are we not under the authority of others? Many people will respond "no" to this question. We can at most claim that we are no longer a colony. It would be challenging to substantiate the claim that no one has any sort of control over us.

Pakistanis have been commemorating their Independence Day for the past 75 years without understanding the distinction between being independent and not being colonised. A state must focus all of its efforts on developing administrative and legal frameworks that are solely governed by the collective desire and interests of its citizens if it is to achieve independence.

The elite in Pakistan appeared eager to hear a guarantee of American protection in the country's early years. Without American assistance, Chaudhry Zafarullah, Malik Ghulam Muhammad, Chaudhary Muhammad Ali, and Iskander Mirza did not believe Pakistan could endure and support itself.

The US first ignored Pakistan's requests. But the ruling class persisted in making sincere efforts to win over America, and they eventually won. A result of this unease, which was mostly felt by the elite, Pakistan joined the SEATO and the CENTO. There should be a thorough study of how these agreements helped us and how we suffered as a result of them. The results will no doubt open many people's eyes.

Only the elite might benefit from playing second fiddle to the US in terms of rewards. The same is true of Pakistan's participation in proxy conflicts. The fact is that Pakistan has relied on resources from abroad, the most of which are under American control.

According to the widely accepted definition of independence, our nation is a dependent, neo-colonial state that is being kept prisoner by a tiny elite. Such a polity is unable to create and implement autonomous policies and cannot ensure its citizens' freedom.

We now focus on the word "freedom." It is a citizen's unalienable right in a free state. The most important characteristic of a citizen is freedom. According to critic Hasan Askari, the ability to speak, act, gather, and hold opinions is what makes a person an adami. One sets out on a path where their true (latent) potential can be realised when going through that transformation. "The attribute or state of being free: such as the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action. b) emancipation from slavery or restraint, or from the control of another." is a straightforward definition of freedom. c) the attribute of being liberated or excused, typically from a burdensome obligation.

Humans have the fundamental freedom to communicate freely about any subject without interference from the government. It's crucial because it enables social transformation and intellectual interchange. We must be careful not to exercise the freedoms and liberties that our constitution grants us in an unfettered way that violates the rights of others.

Freedom loses its meaning in a socially hierarchical society. In order to protect freedoms, the state needs a strong judicial system, which is unfortunately lacking in Pakistan. Thus, governance has suffered greatly. Freedom is reduced to a utopian desire under this circumstance.

The personification of freedom is the eagle. The sight of this bird more than any other symbol stands for complete freedom. Eagles, however, are not common in our environment. I'm curious as to why Iqbal continued urging Muslims to emulate a shaheen. Our lives and our consciousness are noticeably missing of the bird.

In philosophy and theology, freedom is sometimes equated with the capacity for free choice and the absence of unjust or excessive restrictions, such as slavery. It is a thought that is strongly related to the idea of negative liberty. One of the differences between the positive and negative ideas of freedom—first defined in Isaiah Berlin's key article, Two Concepts of Liberty—is addressed by Charles Taylor.

He interchanges the terms liberty and freedom. There are two such families of ideas of political freedom, according to Taylor, and this is obvious. Politics frequently makes use of the idea of negative liberty. It is the notion that having the freedom to do as you like without interference from others. This idea has drawn criticism for being oversimplified and failing to take into account the significance of personal self-realization. Positivity liberty is the capacity to carry out one's goals.

What is polio and how dangerous is it to your health?

On July 21, authorities in the US state of New York announced the first incidence of polio in the nation in almost ten years. The paralysed person was an adult from Rockland County who was illiterate.

Experts claim that the patient had a particular strain of the virus that was acquired from a fake vaccine. According to experts, it may have been spread quickly by someone who had received a live vaccine, which is available in other countries but not in the US.

Soon after the polio virus was found in samples from the suburbs of Orange and Rockland counties, Big Apple health officials announced weeks later that it had been found in the city's sewer system.

Despite the fact that the majority of Americans have had polio vaccinations, the federal government advises anyone who hasn't to go to their local health centre.

What is POLIO or POLIOMYELITIS?

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the USA, for its English abbreviation), polio is a crippling and potentially fatal disease brought on by the poliovirus. The virus can infect the spinal cord and spread from person to person, paralysing some areas of the body.

It is well known that this virus has existed for a very long period. According to some researchers, the earliest instance of this condition was discovered in an ancient Egyptian artwork depicting a guy with dry feet who was unable to hold the weight of his body without the aid of a cane.

According to the CDC, the majority of the muscle fibres have been permanently replaced by fibrous tissue.

According to scientists, if a person had polio as a kid or adolescent but was still able to maintain or regain partial or full mobility in a weak arm or leg, it is likely that they will mature with less mobility. the scientists predict.

What are it's symptoms?

If a person has the polio virus, they might not exhibit any symptoms, according to the CDC. About 72 out of 100 persons experience this; however, 25 out of 100 people may also experience flu-like symptoms.

Some of the poliomyelitis symptoms that repeat frequently are:

• Throat pain

• Fever

• Fatigue

• Nausea

• Headache

• Abdominal pain

These signs and symptoms may appear for two to five days before disappearing.

A small percentage of patients may experience more severe symptoms that directly impact the brain or spinal cord, according to the same agency. They represent one out of every 100 persons, and even one to five out of every 1,000, according to statistics:

Paresthesia: legs experience a tingling sensation.

Meningitis: The spinal cord or brain's lining being infected.

Paralysis: Incapable of moving body parts.

How is it spread?

As it dwells in the throat and intestines of an infected individual, the polio virus is extremely contagious and spreads through person-to-person contact. The virus spreads through a variety of channels after entering the body through the mouth, according to experts:

• Droplets from an infected person's cough or sneeze.

• Coming in contact with the feces of an infected person.

In addition, the CDC noted that a person can become infected if:

• Have small pieces of stool from an infected person on your hands and touch your mouth.

• Putting objects in your mouth, such as toys, that have been contaminated with the feces of an infected person.

What is the treatment?

There are two vaccines available to prevent polio:

• Depending on the patient's age, the poliovirus vaccine (IPV) is injected into either the leg or the arm.

• There are still many regions of the world that use the oral poliovirus vaccination (OPV).
